Pharmacists’ Prescribing for Tobacco Cessation Medications

In many states across the U.S., pharmacists are now authorized to prescribe medications for treating tobacco use and dependence. In a few states, these advanced prescriptive authorities are granted through independent prescribing but in most states it is provided via statewide standing order/protocol. The map below depicts our current knowledge (as of March 2025) regarding which states allow this, and which medications are approved to be prescribed.

States that allow prescribing of these medications only under collaborative practice agreements are not included.
